As per the Ministry of Labour & Employment, the minimum wage for drivers in the central sphere (Zone I) is Rs 10,500 basic pay plus Rs 9,600 Variable Dearness Allowance, totaling Rs 20,100 per month effective April 2026. Overtime is paid at twice the ordinary rate for hours beyond 8 per day. This applies to scheduled employments like motor transport workers.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) driving license, and pass a medical fitness certificate from a government-approved doctor. No formal education is mandatory, but 8th standard pass is required for some central government contracts. Experience of 2 years on HMV is preferred for safety compliance.

Required documents include Aadhaar card, PAN card, valid driving license (LMV/HMV), 10th standard certificate, and 2 years experience certificate attested by previous employer. Photograph and medical fitness certificate are also mandatory. Submit online via NCS with digital signatures.

Under the Motor Transport Workers Act 1961, drivers work maximum 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week with one paid rest day weekly. Annual leave is 12 days after 12 months continuous service, plus 8 days casual/sick leave. Overtime beyond limits pays double wages.
